July 11, Meido Roshi will offer the jukai ceremony, which is a commitment to formally enter the Buddhist path. We will connect to that ceremony by Zoom from Cho'onji temple. Any participant may formally take the commitments and vows of the ceremony.
Schedule of programming at Cho'onji
11AM: Gates are open, volunteer cleaning
12PM: Zazen
1PM: Jukai Ceremony, connected by Zoom to Korinji Monastery
Meido Roshi explains about the ceremony:
On Saturday, July 11th, 12 noon USA Central time - during our July Dai-sesshin at Korinji - we will conduct the Zaike Tokudo ceremony (sometimes called Jukai): the formal ceremony of taking refuge in the Three Jewels and receiving the five lay precepts.
This will be LIVESTREAMED for members of Korinji's larger community, Rinzai Zen International, as our annual Worldwide Jukai event. All members are welcome to participate virtually, and so formally enter (or renew their commitment to) the Buddhist path.
Note that you must keep your video ON, but your sound muted, during this ceremony.
Other details:
1. If you wish to participate, please be clear that this is a formal commitment to the Buddhist path. Candidates should at least be familiar with basic Buddhist teachings, and have given rise to a sincere desire to follow them.
2. During the ceremony, you will formally take refuge in Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. You will also receive the following precepts: Not to kill, not to steal, not to abuse sexuality, not to lie or use false speech, and not to become intoxicated. Roshi will explain more about these during the ceremony, including how one "mends" a precept if it is broken.
4. Prepare for the ceremony properly: Bathe, and brush your teeth/rinse your mouth. Wear clean practice clothing with tabi. If you do not have practice clothing, any neat, modest clothing is fine, with clean socks.
5. If possible, it is best not to eat meat, onions, or garlic on the day of the ceremony. Do not use alcohol or other intoxicants on the day of the ceremony.
6. If you are able, spend some time practicing zazen before the livestream starts.
7. During the ceremony you will recite the following texts along with us, which are all in the section titled "Okyo for Daily Lay Practice":
JYU BUTSU MYO
SANGEMON
SANKIKAI
HANNYA SHINGYO
8. Participants who are formal students of Meido Roshi (having done the Shoken ceremony with him) will be given a homyo, dharma name, at the monastery (in-person) or when he nexts sees you (virtual participants). Others will not receive homyo, only because he does not yet know you, and so it is impossible to choose one that fits. However, Roshi wishes to stress that the ceremony is valid and binding regardless, and virtual participants should not think their Jukai is lesser because they are not with us in person, or if they do not yet receive a name.
